Former WCED minister Maynier on his new role as national minister of Fisheries and Forestry

The minister of Western Cape education department David Maynier has issued a statement after his party in Government of Nstional Unity(GNU) the Democratic Alliance (DA) announced him as the new minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs.

“I am honoured to be nominated to a national cabinet post,” Maynier said, “and I look forward to serving in a new role as the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environmental Affairs.”

Maynier is the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Education, having been appointed to the post in 2022, and reappointed in 2024.

As Minister of Education,Maynier has introduced programmes like the #BackOnTrack programme to improve learning outcomes, and the Rapid School Build programme to expand access to education.

He previously served as the Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities (from 2019 to 2022).

Maynier served for ten years in the National Assembly as Shadow Minister of Finance and Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Cape Town and a master’s degree in Public Administration and Management from Harvard University.

He lives in Cape Town with his wife, Bronwen and their daughter, Isabel.
