Sacrifice Is the Trade – The Quest for Personal Discovery

Have you ever asked yourself what a millionaire or billionaire lost in exchange for their success? Or what a PhD graduate lost in the process of earning their qualifications?

The answer is often hidden in individual stories. But life has taught me one truth: nothing comes easy, and nothing comes without a trade. I always speak about the difference between cost and price. The price is visible on the tag. The cost is unseen. But when you calculate the cost, you can name your price with confidence.

“Time is money” isn’t just rhetoric — it’s reality. The years someone invests in something produce both value and cost. If you’re not willing to listen to the pain of sacrifice now, wait until you get the bill for your secrets later.

Show me your friends and I’ll predict your future. Play now, pay later. Or pay now, play later. You cannot have your bread buttered on both sides. You must decide to sacrifice for the future you want.

There was a Mr Mhlongo in our area. He started selling coal with just a wheelbarrow as a delivery vehicle. As his business grew he then bought a truck. When he passed on, his children grew the business even further — adding a filling station and burial services. And, remember, it all started with one man and his wheelbarrow, a man who was laughed at for starting small.

Mr. Richard Maponya, a self-made businessman who built a mall in Soweto, began by walking door to door selling to his community. He reached billionaire status simply by taking the first step. If you wait for perfect conditions, you won’t build anything remarkable. Be willing to say goodbye to friends and habits that will hinder your success.

One great philosopher was quoted as saying, “If I’m given six hours to chop down a tree, I will spend the first four hours sharpening my axe.” That means take time to prepare, then use it efficiently to deliver results.

My definition of success is: “When opportunity meets a prepared mind.” You could use the same line to define failure: “When opportunity meets an unprepared mind.
