The minister of education in the Western Cape has declared the departments for a successful and incident-free grade12 examination period. The official matric examinations are scheduled to start on 13 October.
Jaco Londt, the minister of education, declared:”It’s official: We are 30 days away from the 2026 matric examinations.” Exams are scheduled to start with Computer Applications Technology paper and will conclude on 25 November 2026. 71 300 full-time National Senior Certificate candidates will be sitting for the exams in the Western Cape.
Western Cape matric exams by the numbers:
- 485 Exam Centres – 477 high schools, 7 primary schools and 1 correctional services
facility will serve as designated centres for part-time learners
- +- 2600 Community invigilators
- 123 Exam papers will be written
- 3857 markers
- Grade 12 teachers, tutors and officials across the province have been putting in the hard work to ensure our Matrics are prepared for the final chapter of their school career.
Over 31 000 matric learners attended #BackOnTrack winter school classes during the mid-year school holiday. These took place across the 8 education districts in the province and covered various subjects. Revision classes will be taking place over the upcoming third term break.
A range of support resources have been made available on the WCED website (https://www.westerncape.gov.za/education/matric-support), such as Grade 12 exam question papers and memoranda, video tutorials, study guides and subject-specific academic support, study tips, information on funding for further studies, health and wellbeing support resources, and free internet and related services through WCG eCentres.
Lindy emphasised with learners and parents,saying:”We know how stressful this period can be for learners. We encourage those who are struggling, or adults who are concerned about a learner’s mental health, to reach out to the WCED for help,” He said school staff can seek guidance from district support teams, and Safe Schools Hotline [0800 45 46 47 toll free can connect learners with help from sister departments and NGOs.
Londt asked parents, guardians, and communities to work with the department to support learners during this time. “Let us not disrupt their precious study time or do anything that could negatively impact their focus.” He encouraged the matriculants to seize the: moment. “Breathe, take it in, and put in the necessary time and work. There will be time for celebrations later. For now, remain disciplined and focused, your hard work will pay off. The Western Cape is supporting you all the way.”
