The Mpumalanga Province will host the 31st National Congress of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA) at the University of Mpumalanga, Mbombela Campus, from 13 to 17 July 2026.
The five-day National Congress will bring together more than 1500 delegates, including leading local and international mathematics education experts, researchers, academics, curriculum specialists, policymakers and representatives of educational organisations.
The Congress serve as a strategic platform to explore innovative approaches to strengthening Mathematics education and improving learner outcomes.
It will facilitate the exchange of cutting-edge research, best practices and practical solutions aimed at transforming the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
It also aligns with the aspirations of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 by advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and developing the skills required for South Africa’s future economic growth and global competitiveness.
The MEC for Education in Mpumalanga, Ms. Lindi Masina, will deliver the keynote address during the official opening alongside with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor T Meyiwa and President of AMESA, Mr. Duba on Monday, 13 July 2026.
In her address, the MEC is expected to outline the province’s comprehensive strategy to improve learner participation and performance in Mathematics, while reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to building a strong pipeline of learners equipped for careers in science, engineering, technology and innovation.
Mpumalanga continues to make significant progress in Mathematics education.
The province has established 101 secondary schools where Mathematics and Physical Sciences are offered on a compulsory basis.
This is intended to broadening learner participation in these critical subjects.
To further strengthen curriculum delivery and educator capacity, the Province established the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy, which provides continuous professional development, curriculum support and specialised in-service training for Mathematics and Science teachers.
The Department looks forward to welcoming delegates from across South Africa and around the world to the Place of the Rising Sun, where collaboration, innovation and research will help shape the future of Mathematics education.
