Auditions, Portfolios and Applications: How to Prepare for Arts School
In my previous articles, I spoke about why arts matter and how learners can study arts after matric. But many learners still ask an important question:
“How do we actually get accepted into an arts programme?”
Unlike many other fields, arts programmes sometimes require more than good marks. They want to see your creativity, commitment, and potential. That is where portfolios and auditions come in.
What is an audition?
An audition is a short performance where you demonstrate your talent to a panel from the institution.
This may include:
• Performing a monologue
• Singing a song
• Presenting a dance piece
• Reading a poem
• Performing a short scene
Do not panic when you hear the word audition. The panel is not expecting perfection. They are looking for potential, passion, and willingness to learn.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of your creative work that shows your ability and growth.
For actors:
• Videos of performances
• School drama productions
• Monologues
For musicians:
• Audio recordings
• Videos of performances
• Music compositions
For visual artists:
• Drawings
• Paintings
• Sculptures
• Photography
For writers:
• Poems
• Short stories
• Scripts
• Essays
Start preparing early. Join drama clubs, school choirs, poetry competitions, community theatre groups, or art exhibitions. Every experience helps build your artistic journey. Practice your audition regularly. Work on speaking clearly, expressing emotions, and performing with confidence. Ask teachers or mentors to give feedback. Sometimes the panel will ask questions such as:
• Why do you want to study this?
• What inspires you?
• What are your future goals?
Be honest. They want to see that you are serious about your craft.
Do not let fear stop you from applying. Many successful artists were once nervous learners standing outside an audition room. The difference is simple: they showed up. Believe in your gift. Prepare well, and walk into that audition with courage.
