Mirrors and Reflections

AMBASSADOR – The Quest for Personal Discovery

It was a few months before I went to Zimbabwe for the Young People Against the Spread of AIDS project. My director looked at me and said,  “You are going to be an ambassador when you get to Zimbabwe. The people of Zimbabwe will see South Africa through you.” From that day I understood what being an ‘ambassador’ means. *You are the reflection of your country.*

That remains one of the most precious tasks I have ever been given. To represent a country means to suspend your personal interests while advocating for the interests of others. It means allowing yourself to be a tool that prioritizes the needs of your society.

The truth is: anything you do out of love will have great impact on the recipient. No force has ever been able to surpass race, religion, and status like love has. It was the love of country that made Mama Winnie Mandela continue the struggle for equity.
