The Nkangala TVET College in Mpumalanga hosted learners from local schools at the launch of a month-long exhibition on career pathways in the beginning of August.
The main aim of the career exhibition was to champion technical and vocational education.
Emphasising the theme of the event, ‘skills, opportunities and change’, the principal of the college, Cain Maimela, said there was a need to expand access to skills development. “The expansion of access to skills is significant,” he said.
Unemployed students in the region were not left behind. They were given opportunities to mingle and pose questions to representatives of various SETAs and CEOs who were part of stakeholders present at the event. They gained insights into information on funding and entrepreneurial pathways.
In his keynote address, Sam Zungu, the deputy director-generalin the department of higher education and training, underscored the critical role the TVET sector plays in driving entrepreneriship and job creation across South Africa. He said TVET colleges now prioritised entreprenial training to equip students with skills to establish small businesses or cooperatives. “We are instilling an entrepreneurship culture through focused development programmes,” Zungu said.
