It is essential for parents to show interest in the education of their children

As learners prepare for exams, parental support plays a vital role in promoting both academic success and emotional well-being. A supportive home environment helps the learners to develop confidence, maintain motivation, and cope effectively with the pressures associated with studying and assessment. Parents who show interest in their children’s studies offer reassurance during stressful periods and contribute significantly towards concentration and performance. This involvement can take various forms, including helping with studying and revision, attending school events, and maintaining open communication with teachers. Parents can also provide ample time for learners to study,  by reducing their home chores during exam preparation.

THE ROLE OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

Parental involvement in education significantly contributes to the child’s academic success and emotional wellbeing. When parents are actively involved in the child’s education, they tend to have higher grades and enhanced social skills and less anxiety disorders. They can help the learner by creating a conducive learning environment, and reading together and encouraging educational activities. Attending parents/teachers meetings and volunteering in class and school activities also boost the child’s morale. Elder siblings also play a pivotal role in assisting the younger ones with their revision and study efforts.

THE POWER OF PARENTS:

There is a strong emphasis for parental involvement in their children’s education both at home and at school. This is said to translate into long-lasting benefits from early childhood through to adulthood. It is associated with children’s socio-emotional development, academic success, student motivation at school as well as high school completion. A parent does not need to have special education or skills to make an impact on the child, simple activities that involve genuine interest and active engagement from parents are enough to make a meaningful difference. Just a few minutes of listening to the child’s repetition of what they have learned is good enough to prove that you care about their lessons and it encourages them to put more effort in their studies.

THE EFFECT OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE:

Parents who show interest in their children’s education have been linked to improved academic performance. This can be demonstrated through assisting with school work, joining in extracurricular activities, and talking to teachers about the child’s educational progress. This helps to motivate the learner and also helps in the child’s personal development and academic outcomes. Discussing school work with the learner and reading together makes a great difference in motivating them to take interest in their studies. The parents can also participate in the parents-teachers association to influence decisions and school improvement strategies. This helps to motivate their children.

STRATEGIES FOR PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE:

Involvement of parents in their children’s education can be done by way of home-based school work, school-based involvement, communication and collaboration. Parents can also help by monitoring and motivation of school work, and providing school learning resources. School performance must also be monitored throughout from the school records. The learners must also be motivated by positive reinforcement. The parents must also give the child an opportunity to narrate what they have learned at school during the day. This helps to revive their memory, and it’s another way of revision.

Involvement of the learners in the household planning that makes them implement the academic knowledge in real practice. e.g. budgeting, financial management, etc. Eat meals together with children, and use this time to discuss school activities. This helps to prove to the child how much interest you are showing in their studies and how you keep contacting their teachers to get an update about their progress in school. Parents must also make time to volunteer in school activities or be involved in school governance matters. This helps to motivate their children and make them to be well behaved. Their academic performance will also improve.

Cheers. Stay healthy, clean and of sound mind.
